They are known to be harsh and fierce by the way. Probably because of the wildness of the landscape :

I will add that because of their geographic position in east Algeria, they were the ones who will inevitably confront any invasion from the east , and since in historic times the invasions never ceased , people of that region developed a strong culture of resistance...

Indeed, they are called Tharwa n Elkahina (sons of the Kahina), I will post later some linguistics and anthropological facts about them later.

Chawi ethnonym is of Arab origin from "shah=sheep" "shawi=sheep herder"
and its used also for the bedouin herders of Syria (called shawiya also) as well as arabs from central africa (shuwa and baggara arabs)
"shah" could be the source of the iranian word "shu"=sheep;shupan in persian=herder[litteraly means sheep(shu)protector(pan)]

Yes, but I think that was a later ethnonym because a friend from Oued el Abiodh (Ighzer Amellal in Berber) told me that that their elderly just use Amazigh but some call theselves Zenati (U-Jana in Berber as like as some tribes in central Algeria).

A quote from the Edmond Destaing's book "Dictionnaire français-berbère (dialecte des Beni-Snous)"
p. 373

Haraoua : We are Zenati "nechni d ijenathen"
I Am a Zenati : "netch d wadjana"
Metmata : I know Berber language : "ssnegh janath"
